Violet Revolution Opens in Yankee Pedlar

Platinum Salon is expanding into a storefront that briefly was Yankee Yogurt, a frozen yogurt shop. Alec Johnson/ Republican-American

TORRINGTON — A downtown salon that has been an anchor tenant in The Yankee Pedlar Inn for a dozen years is expanding to another storefront in the 123-year-old hotel.

Diane Concannon, owner of Platinum Salon, said she has been pushing forward to transform a former frozen yogurt shop into a hair salon to add four chairs to her lineup bringing her total staff to 12. If everything goes to plan, she hopes open Violet Revolution at Platinum Salon this weekend. It’s going to be an edgier, more hip version of her salon. Though associated, Violet Revolution will have it’s own entrance both from Main Street and from the hotel lobby.

Concannon said her parents opened a salon in Torrington in 1967 and she has clients who started with her parents and have stayed with her. Some have been coming more than four decades, she said.

Concannon changed the name from Fountain Blue to Platinum when she took over.

“Now I am evolving again,” she said. “I am going to try it and I hope it works out.”

Concannon said she wants to bring younger foot traffic downtown, where her lights are on from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The staff will have hair stylists from age 19 to 62 in the salon covering all ages and hair styles.

“In the hair industry, you have to evolve all the time to kind of keep up with new trends,” she said. “The girls I have are extremely loyal and are all wonderful stylists. The girls I am bringing in are younger and I think it will be a little edgier.”

By the time all the chairs are filled Concannon will have a dozen stylists working downtown. Three have been hired, including a barber.

Concannon said she has a lot of interest in the final job, but she is searching for the perfect fit. “We have such a great dynamic within the salon,” she said. “Everybody works together and helps each other.”
